Grant Overview
Nova Scotia applications face documented constraints around per-participant instructional hours and travel distances between Cape Breton reserves and mainland Mi'kmaq communities. Provincial education funding allocations provide fewer than 90 minutes per week of dedicated Mi'kmaq language instruction in most public schools serving Mi'kmaq students.
Applicants must supply enrollment verification from one of the 13 Mi'kmaq communities or the Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey education authority. Cost documentation must show that requested funds will cover instructor wages, curriculum printing, or digital platform licenses rather than general overhead.
The $10,000 maximum restricts projects to 12 months or less and requires a detailed cost-per-youth calculation. Applications lacking evidence of alignment with the provincial Mi'kmaq Language Strategy 2022-2027 receive automatic disqualification.
Unlike New Brunswick proposals that can draw on provincial bilingual programming budgets, Nova Scotia submissions must demonstrate that costs exceed existing federal Indigenous language funding envelopes already committed to the same communities. Quarterly reporting on participant hours and language assessment scores is mandatory for all awarded projects.
