Grant Overview

After-School Physical Activity Initiatives in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia has been facing a growing childhood obesity crisis, with recent statistics indicating that approximately one in three children is classified as overweight or obese. Contributing factors include increased screen time, limited access to safe recreational spaces, and a lack of structured physical activities. The impact on children’s health is profound, leading to increased risks of chronic diseases later in life.

Particularly affected are children in low-income urban neighborhoods and rural communities where recreational facilities are often sparse. Many parents express difficulty in affording extracurricular activities, limiting their children’s opportunities to engage in physical exercise. Existing after-school programs may not be adequately funded, resulting in a lack of resources and trained staff to supervise children's activities effectively.

The proposed initiative seeks to combat pediatric obesity in Nova Scotia by providing free after-school programs that promote physical activities tailored to local interests and needs. Collaborating with local sports organizations and educational institutions, the project aims to create diverse opportunities for children to participate in activities ranging from team sports to dance and outdoor adventures. This initiative aspires to foster not only healthier habits among children but also social connections that can contribute to their emotional well-being.

To ensure the program’s success, community input will be integral in designing the activities and recruiting local leaders to coach and mentor participants. By investing in after-school physical activity initiatives, Nova Scotia can directly address the pressing issue of childhood obesity while also instilling lifelong healthy habits in its youth.
