Grant Overview

Nova Scotia's maritime economy and coastal geography create distinct program-delivery patterns between the urban Halifax Regional Municipality and the rural Eastern Shore or South Shore counties. Christian Science students applying for maritime-heritage funding must show that proposed field activities use publicly scheduled ferry routes or established wharves rather than private vessel charters.

Eligibility documentation includes confirmation that the student attends a school within the Nova Scotia Regional Centre for Education and that the project aligns with existing STEM modules already embedded in the grade 7–9 curriculum. Budgets must separate costs for transportation on provincial roads from any overnight accommodation, because the latter is funded only when the site lies more than 150 kilometers from the applicant's home address.

Panels examine whether the requested activities utilize existing partnerships between schools and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic or the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, thereby avoiding duplication of provincially supported programming. Applicants must also indicate how equipment such as basic navigation tools will be stored and maintained within school facilities after the grant period.

Rural applicants receive additional consideration when travel occurs during shoulder seasons to reduce ferry congestion, consistent with documented capacity limits on routes serving the smaller coastal communities.
