Nova Scotia generates 14,000 tonnes of marine debris annually from lost fishing gear and aquaculture infrastructure, concentrated along the Eastern Shore and Cape Breton. Digital mapping coverage exists for only 38 percent of priority embayments, forcing removal crews to rely on paper logs that cannot integrate with provincial GIS layers.
School boards in Guysborough and Richmond counties serve 4,200 students with limited access to field sites; current environmental education units average 1.8 hours per term versus 6.4 hours in urban Halifax programs.
The grant funds LiDAR-equipped drones for debris tagging and reimburses vessel charter costs tied to mapped polygons. Participating schools must log student participation against verified removal tonnage.
Operational Standards for Nova Scotia
Proposals require submission of existing debris density layers from the provincial Coastal Monitoring Program. Only groups with demonstrated capacity to upload data to the federal Ocean Navigator platform receive funding.
