Nova Scotia's dual coastal exposures create distinct marine conservation planning parameters. The Atlantic-facing shelf experiences different tidal ranges and sediment transport than the Gulf of St. Lawrence side. Research designs must therefore collect separate baseline datasets rather than treating the province as a single oceanographic unit.

The inshore lobster fishery operates across 33 licensed districts with distinct seasonal closures. Any spatial planning model must incorporate current fishing effort maps rather than theoretical habitat layers alone.

Border dynamics with New Brunswick and France (St. Pierre and Miquelon) add jurisdictional complexity. Projects that ignore these overlapping management zones will produce maps that cannot be implemented by provincial or federal regulators.

Unlike New Brunswick applications, Nova Scotia requires explicit modeling of hurricane-induced storm surge on nearshore conservation priorities.

Marine Conservation Planning Parameters in Nova Scotia

Institutions must produce maps at 1:50,000 scale that integrate fisheries catch data, vessel tracking records, and benthic habitat surveys collected by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Model outputs should identify priority areas while maintaining existing lobster fishing access under current license conditions.

Data collection should utilize existing acoustic receiver arrays deployed for Atlantic salmon tracking rather than new deployments. This reduces vessel time and permits immediate analysis of multi-year movement datasets.

Application Requirements for Nova Scotia Research Institutions

Eligible applicants must secure letters of support from both the provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the relevant Mi'kmaq organizations before field work begins. Budgets should line-item community liaison time and translation of summary reports into Mi'kmaq.

Remote institutions must budget for extended stays in Halifax to access the provincial geospatial data library and coordinate with federal science staff located at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.
