Marine renewable energy developers require site-specific turbulence data at 1-metre vertical resolution to model turbine loading, yet existing acoustic Doppler current profiler deployments cover fewer than 8 percent of the province's 150 potential tidal passages.
Who Qualifies in Nova Scotia Applicants must hold a valid Canadian Hydrographic Service chart licence and submit bathymetric validation data collected within the previous 24 months. Proposals limited to the Bras d'Or Lakes or the Eastern Shore are not considered because those areas fall outside the province's designated tidal energy demonstration zones.
Application Requirements and Realities Each application requires a memorandum of understanding with at least one tidal device developer holding a Fisheries and Oceans Canada permit. The province's grid operator demands a power quality impact study before any instrument mooring is placed within 500 metres of existing submarine cables.
Fit Assessment for Nova Scotia Context The $3,000 award covers sensor rental and vessel charter but excludes costs for electromagnetic interference testing required near the Maritime Link HVDC cable. Successful proposals demonstrate that collected current and wave data can be ingested directly into the province's tidal resource atlas without proprietary formatting. Unlike New Brunswick applications, Nova Scotia requires explicit tidal-stream velocity exceedance curves calculated at 10-minute intervals across a full lunar cycle.
