Nova Scotia's peninsula geography produces 7,400 kilometres of coastline within a total area of 55,284 square kilometres. This configuration results in numerous small communities separated by water or limited road corridors. Provincial disability surveys indicate that 19 percent of working-age residents report mobility restrictions, with elevated rates in Cape Breton and the Eastern Shore where public transit options are minimal.
The Maritime Accessibility Project restricts eligibility to applicants that already operate a registered charity or municipal recreation department. Individuals must demonstrate three years of prior program delivery within the province and provide audited financial statements showing at least $25,000 in annual adaptive-recreation expenditures. New organizations are ineligible regardless of proposed partnerships.
Applications require a site map confirming that proposed locations fall within 50 kilometres of a hospital with emergency orthopaedic capacity. They must also include a memorandum of understanding with the Nova Scotia Health Authority detailing referral pathways for participants experiencing equipment-related injury. Unlike Newfoundland requirements, Nova Scotia does not accept ferry-cost offsets; reviewers instead evaluate whether the applicant can absorb these costs within existing operational budgets.
Funding decisions incorporate the province's documented 14-week average wait time for adaptive-equipment assessments through the provincial Assistive Devices Program. Applicants that can shorten this interval through direct provision receive additional scoring weight. All equipment must carry Canadian Standards Association certification for marine environments due to frequent exposure during coastal transport.
