Nova Scotia's cancer care coordination capacity is constrained by the concentration of hematologists in Halifax and a single provincial stem cell transplant program. Patients from Cape Breton or the Annapolis Valley experience median referral-to-consult intervals of 27 days for acute leukemia workups, exceeding national benchmarks by nine days. Electronic health record interoperability between district health authorities remains incomplete, affecting real-time tracking of treatment protocols.
Capacity assessments for grant applications must therefore include baseline metrics on existing nurse navigator caseloads and available slots for multidisciplinary tumor board review. Projects proposing new coordination pathways require written confirmation from Nova Scotia Health that infrastructure changes will not exceed current IT change-control windows.
Eligible expenses under the research support grant include salaries for temporary project coordinators, supplies for patient navigation toolkits, and contracted services for data abstraction from the provincial cancer registry. Travel funds are restricted to in-province movement between Halifax and the three largest district hospitals. Equipment requests are limited to tablet devices pre-approved for secure clinical use.
Applications must demonstrate that any coordination intervention can be absorbed into existing district staffing models within 24 months. Budgets omitting absorption plans are declined at the administrative review stage.
Unlike neighboring provinces, Nova Scotia requires explicit mapping of the proposed intervention against the provincial Cancer Care Action Plan performance indicators before scientific scoring begins.
