Nova Scotia's Readiness_first funding stream evaluates whether applicant teams can maintain cancer navigation research protocols across the 4 600 km coastline while contending with the province's 47 % rural population that lives more than 50 km from a medical oncologist. Halifax houses the sole comprehensive cancer centre, forcing rural patients to travel an average 3.2 hours each way for trials.
Application requirements include letters of support from each of the nine regional health authorities plus the Nova Scotia Health Authority's central research ethics board. Budgets must reflect ferry and air costs for Cape Breton and South Shore participants.
Fit assessment for state context examines whether investigators have already mapped existing cancer-patient navigation pathways used by the Canadian Cancer Society's Nova Scotia division. Projects that duplicate these pathways rather than integrate with them are rejected.
Successful submissions demonstrate that bilingual French-English materials and Mi'kmaq translation capacity have been pre-arranged with community organisations before recruitment begins. Data-management plans must address the province's single electronic health record system that still lacks real-time rural clinic connectivity.
Unlike New Brunswick applications, Nova Scotia requires demonstration of extreme rural delivery capacity due to frontier county designation and limited tertiary pathology services outside Halifax Regional Municipality.
