Grant Overview

Nova Scotia sculptors must demonstrate at least five years of professional sculpture practice and provide exhibition documentation from venues outside the province to meet the grant’s international standard. Residency verification requires a Nova Scotia driver’s licence or provincial health card issued no later than the start of the prior calendar year.

Concentrations of eligible artists exist in Halifax and Lunenburg, where former shipyards and waterfront warehouses supply suitable studio space. Sculptors working on the South Shore or Cape Breton Island submit additional distance calculations for material deliveries from Halifax suppliers.

Applications demand an inventory of completed sculptures with measurements, installation photographs, and evidence of prior sales or institutional loans. References must come from curators or gallery directors who have presented the work within the last four years.

The grant pays in one installment. Nova Scotia recipients record the award on their provincial tax return under professional income and retain all material receipts for seven years in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency rules.

Halifax-based applicants hold a measurable edge because the city’s two major galleries issue the only exhibition contracts reviewers accept without further notarization.

Nova Scotia filings differ from those of other Maritime provinces by the required inclusion of tidal and weather delay estimates when projects involve outdoor installation on coastal sites.
