Nova Scotia’s population over age 65 constitutes 21.4 percent of residents, the highest share among Canadian provinces. This demographic profile concentrates potential frontotemporal dementia cases within a single-payer health system that maintains centralised electronic records but lacks a dedicated research ethics pathway for neurodegenerative studies.
Eligibility requires that the applicant institution be located within the province and hold active affiliation with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. Out-of-province collaborators may participate only as co-investigators with no direct access to provincial health data extracts.
Application requirements include submission of a data-access request to the provincial privacy commissioner at least 90 days before the funding deadline, together with evidence that the study protocol has been reviewed by the Nova Scotia Research Ethics Board. Projects that omit this pre-clearance step are returned without review.
The funding further stipulates that any diagnostic criteria employed must align with the province’s existing dementia care pathway, which routes suspected cases through memory clinics in Halifax and Sydney rather than through primary care. This constraint narrows the pool of eligible researchers to those already embedded in the provincial neurology network.
Applications succeed when they incorporate the province’s distinct settlement pattern of small coastal communities and the resulting challenges of delivering consistent neuropsychological testing outside the Halifax Regional Municipality.
